Our Approach to Dating Support

We believe that people thrive in close and connected relationships, and we want to help you with every step of the process. We’ll meet you wherever you are on your journey, be it fresh off a break up, contemplating dating, or in a new relationship. We’ll help you with:

  • Identifying unhelpful past patterns and strategies for interrupting them

We’ll help you explore your romantic history as well as your early relationships with caregivers to understand the patterns that you tend toward in relationships. In addition to being able to intellectually identify these, we will help you go a step further to create new emotional experiences that help you naturally avoid these patterns in the future.

  • How to put yourself out in the world in a way that facilitates meeting your people 

We’re not afraid to get in the weeds with you and talk about how to meet the people that are likely to be a good match for you, including how to use dating apps with authenticity, integrity, and in a way that won’t leave you feeling burnt out.

  • Putting your best foot forward in the early stages of dating

The early stages of dating can be really fun and exciting, but it can also be a fertile ground for our old patterns to emerge and our less healthy attachment strategies to play out. We can help you feel resourced and self-aware so that you show up in a way you can be proud of in the “talking stage” and beyond. We’re not a fan of playing games, or rules like “wait three days before calling,” and want to help you find better ways to relate to potential partners.

  • Discerning healthy and unhealthy relationship patterns 

We’ll help you cultivate your own wisdom about what feels healthy and supportive to you in a relationship, and support you in creating a relationship with yourself in which you know you deserve a safe, loving, and fun relationship. 

  • Cultivating a healthy relationship with sex

We’ll create a non-judgmental and sex-positive environment to explore what sex means to you, and the type of sex life you want with others and yourself. 

  • Creating a truly secure bond with the person you are dating

In later stages of your relationship, we’ll help you develop the communication skills to create a truly secure bond in which you feel confident in your relationship and it can truly feel like a secure base from which you can be your best self!

Attachment-Based

We are attachment-based therapists, which means that we value and honor the importance of intimate relationships, and we believe in healthy interdependence. We don’t think it’s codependent or bad to want a partner that you can lean on  - we think that’s perfectly healthy, and that we all do best when we have a relationship or relationships that serve as a secure base and a safe haven. We will help you understand how your early attachments with your caregivers have shaped your adult attachment style, but we are less focused on labels like “anxious” or “insecure,” and more focused on helping you compassionately understand how you tend to feel and react in the face of relationship stress. We are strong believers that anyone can create a more secure way of relating, even people who did not experience safe and secure attachments when they were young. 

Therapy, Not Coaching

While we aren’t afraid to give you pragmatic suggestions about the specifics of dating, we are not coaches, we’re therapists. This means that we have years of training to support you in getting to the root of the struggles you may be experiencing in dating and relationships. We also must meet strict standards of ethics and ongoing training.  While we aren’t against dating coaches, we think it’s helpful to work with a professional who can support you at every level, including working in a trauma-informed and skillful way with the deeper issues that may arise in the course of exploring your dating experience. 

Years of Couples Therapy Experience

A big percentage of the work we do at Colorado Therapy Collective is with couples. This means that when we work with individuals, we bring that wealth of knowledge about where relationships get stuck and what it takes to make them thrive to our work with you. We draw from evidence-based therapy methods, including Emotionally Focused Therapy and Motivational Interviewing.
